La première fois que j’ai entendu parler d’Utrecht, j’étais encore sur les bancs de l’Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire de Nantes. Les étudiants hollandais de l’université d’Utrecht venaient souvent faire une année de formation en langue française dans notre belle école située sur les bords de l’Erdre. Il fallait donc que je puisse voir cette belle université dont le jumelage n’avait pour moi que quelques visages. Et pour oser demander à un chauffeur de faire un petit détour par l’université après ma demi-finale, il me fallait gagner. Je ne crois pas aux privilèges mais la victoire introduit souvent une joie partagée qui ouvre quelques portes !
Je comprends ce qu’il se passe. Je sais que je dois me concentrer sur ma première, être offensif et passer en mode « Coupe du Monde ». C’est ainsi que je décris le mode où il ne faut rien lâcher. Un mode où si on fait quelques erreurs, il faut vite se réveiller pour le reste de l’équipe. Nous allons donc enchainer nos jeux de service. Je passe de nombreuses premières. Je fais à nouveau des aces en variation. Je prends la balle tôt. Je gagne très facilement mes services tandis que j’ai des occasions de break quasiment sur tous les jeux de Robin. Je n’en concrétise aucun mais je prends mon mal en patience. 5/4 service Robin 30/15. Je fais un retour de coup droit gagnant pour revenir à 30A. Le point suivant dure un peu et Robin essaie de me déborder sur mon revers puis de jouer long de ligne sur mon coup droit à nouveau. Je le vois faire, je suis là à temps et je le vois repartir vers le centre. Je joue un coup droit le long de la ligne dans son dos et m’offre ma première balle de match. Robin me sert sur le revers mais je me suis décalé pour rejouer un coup droit au centre. Robin accélère et rejoue côté revers mais je suis toujours sur mon décalage et je finis le match par un coup droit décroisé qu’il ne peut toucher.
Ma rencontre avec Utrecht sera donc marquée par une finale à nouveau contre le numéro un mondial Shingo Kunieda. Nous avons déjà décidé de nous entrainer ensemble demain matin avant la finale comme pour nous dire que le tennis l’emportera quoiqu’il arrive…

The first time I have heard about Utrecht, I was still on the bench of my veterinary school in Nantes. Dutch students from Utrecht University came for a year to learn in French in our so beautiful school based near the river the Erdre. Then I wanted to see this twin university which was for me only few friends’ faces. And to be able to ask the driver to drive me through the university after my semi finale I had to win! I do not trust in privileges but when you win the happiness helps to open few doors!
I took the lead of the match immediately and it is nearly easily that I was up 5/1 before Robin took his chance and had shots he keeps secret. He came easily back to 5/4 but I will well served this last game and win the first 6 games to 4. The second set is exactly what I do this last matches. My serve is not so good, I am less aggressive and I loose really often my serve. Fortunately my return is good and I keep the score to 3 all and then 5/3 for Robin after a new break for him. I won my serve again but Robin won the second 6/4 also.
I understand what happens. I know I have to focus on my first serve, have to be aggressive and be like in the World Team Cup. Even if I make errors, I have to wake up and change for the rest of the team. We win both our serves. I have very good first serves. I have full aces again. I take the ball very early after the bound. I win my serve easily and I have many break points on Robins’ serve. But I do not win even once. I have to wait. 5/4 Robin to serve 30/15. I have a winner on a forehand return to go to 30A. Next point is long and Robin try to let me roll on my backhand and then on my forehand. I see what he does, I am there on the ball, I see him coming back to the centre and I have a nice straight forehand that offers me my first match point. Robin serves on my backhand but I was ready to play with my forehand right on Robin. He accelerates the ball and play on my backhand but I was ready again to play a forehand on his backhand. He can’t touch the ball.
First time in Utrecht will be a finale again world number one Shingo Kunieda. WE have ever decided to warm up together tomorrow. It is a way for us to say that only tennis will win...whatever it will happen.

Le site de l’ITF l’avait annoncé comme la revanche de la semaine dernière. Je ne sais pas s’il fallait le voir ainsi mais c’est vrai que c’est le mot qui était dans toutes les bouches. Nombreux était ceux qui n’avaient pas compris ma défaite contre lui au British. Ils m’avaient posé de nombreuses questions pour essayer de comprendre. Ma réponse a toujours été la même et des plus simples : « Stefan a très bien joué et il a été le plus fort ce jour là. » On m’avait mis dans le rang de ceux qui ne pouvait pas perdre contre Stefan car j’avais battu Shingo. Mais pourtant le tennis, comme le golf auparavant, est plus fort que l’être humain et il nous rappelle l’humilité au quotidien. J’avais déjà vu le gros potentiel de Stefan mais c’est vrai aussi qu’il était capable du meilleur comme du pire alors on préfèrait penser au pire quand on était de l’autre côté du filet. J’avais gardé en tête la phrase de la jeune junior anglaise Jordanne Whiley qui sait déjà si jeune positiver dans toutes les situations : « I am good, you were just better » qui veut dire je suis bonne mais vous avez été meilleur. Elle ajoute aussi souvent « today » aujourd’hui, comme pour se dire que cela changera très vite. C’est dans ces dispositions que j’ai joué mon quart de finale contre Stefan Olsson ici à Utrecht, Pays-Bas. Je joue bien, il a été meilleur la semaine dernière mais aujourd’hui est un autre jour. Juste avant le match le père de Stefan va me donner un autre indice ! Il se présente à moi et me dit que je joue son fils aujourd’hui. Je le félicite pour la semaine passée et lui dit que Stefan a vraiment bien joué et qu’il a fait de gros progrès. Son père acquiesce mais il me glisse en même temps « Yes, but it was indoor », oui mais c’était en salle. Stefan sert très bien mais a de gros problèmes de repères à l’extérieur. Il doute alors sur son point fort qu’est son service. Je sais que de mon côté je n’ai passé que 20% de premières balles la semaine dernière sur les moments clés. J’ai fait un très bon rapport de mon match avec Jean-Luc Jegou, le nouveau coach de l’équipe de France, et Fabrice Chargelegue. Je sais que je n’étais pas sur un pic de forme, que je manquais un peu de matchs. Je dois rester sur des choses simples et utiliser aussi mon service comme une arme. Le match commence comme la semaine dernière avec un 5/0 pour moi d’entrée puis un 5/1 et un 6/ 1. Le début du second se joue sur le service de Stefan. Le jeu est long et sur une balle de jeu pour moi il fait un revers long de ligne dans le couloir. Il n’y a pas d’arbitre ! Stefan est le long du couloir et moi j’arrive de travers. On se regarde tous les deux et on s’interroge du regard. Stefan me dit elle est dans le couloir ou alors elle touche de très très peu. Mais c’est toi qui décide ! Je ne peux pas rester sur là-dessus, je décide de rejouer le point. Stefan le gagne mais je gagnerai quand même le jeu. Finalement je déroule, je maintiens continuellement la pression et Stefan ne gère pas son service. J’enchaine sur un nouveau 6/1 et m’offre une place en demi-finale contre le numéro 2 mondial, le joueur du pays, Robin Ammerlaan.

ITF’s website announced this match as the revenge of last week. I don’t know whether it was good or not to think as revenge but it was the word everybody was thinking about. Many people did not understand my loss against him during the British Open. I had so many questions on my loss; people wanted to understand why. But my answer was always the same and quite simple: “Stefan played very well and he was better this day”. I was classified with the one who can’t lose against Stefan because I defeated Shingo. But tennis, like golf before, is stronger than all the humans and it teaches us humility day after day. I have ever seen how strong Stefan could be but it was also truth that he was able to produce the best as the worst. So we do prefer when we are on the other side of the net that he will produce his worst! I always keep in mind the sentence of the young English junior Jordanne Whiley, who knows how to be positive in every situation, “I am good, you were just better”. She also adds most of the time “today”, which means, it will change quickly! This is how I was before to play my quarter finale against Stefan Olsson here in Utrecht, Netherlands. I play well; he was better last week but today is another day. Before the match Stefan’s dad will help me involuntary. I came to me and said I will play his son today. I congratulate him for last week and said his son improved a lot. He agrees and also said “Yes but it was indoor”. Stefan has a very good serve but he has big problems outdoor. Then he has many doubts on his stronger part of the game. I also know that last week I had only 20% of first serve during the key points. I had a very good debriefing with Jean-Luc Jegou, new coach of the French Team, and Fabrice Chargelegue. I know I was not on a top form; I did not have enough matches two weeks before the British. I have to play simple shots and use my serve as a good weapon. The beginning of the match is the same as last week, 5/0 then 5/1 and 6/1. Stefan served the first game of the second set. The game is long and on a break point, for me, Stefan had a straight backhand out. But Stefan is in front of the ball and I am coming cross to the ball. So he is in a better position to decide. There is no chair umpire. We ask each the other with the eyes and Stefan said me I think my ball is out or it touched just a little the line but it is up to you! I can’t decide on such a point. I decided to play it again. Stefan won the point but I will finally win the game. I keep him under pressure all the time and Stefan is not able to manage his serve. I will win the second set on another 6/1 and will have a place in the semi finale against world number two, countryman, Robin Ammerlaan.
New World's Ranking
Because of the British Open and a new big win from Shingo Kunieda against Robin Ammerlaan in the final, the new ranking was updated on Monday and not on Tuesday. My friend Michael Jeremiasz did not play the open lost his points from last year semi final. I had no points because of my loss against Stefan Olsson but all the good results I had before gave me the chance to be in the top 3. I am now, exactly one year and nine months after my entry in the world's ranking, the world number 3. I have beaten all the players in the top 10 except Satoshi Saida who I haven't played for a long time. One year before the Paralympic Games in Beijing being number 3 and being the first French in the world's ranking does not mean anything. But you are well seeded in the draws when you are 3 or 4 and 1 and 2. Grâce au British open et une nouvelle belle victoire de Shingo Kunieda sur Robin Ammerlaan en finale, le nouveau classement mondial a été mis à jour ce lundi et non pas mardi. Mon copain Michael n'a pas joué le tournoi et il a perdu ses points de sa demi-finale de l'an passé. Je n'ai pas pris non plus de points en raison de ma défaite contre Stefan Olsson mais tout mes bons résultats de ces derniers temps m'offre la chance d'entrer dans le top 3 mondial. Je suis aujourd'hui, exactement un an et neuf mois après mon entrée dans le classement mondial, le n°3 mondial. J'ai battu tous les joueurs du top 10 à l'exception de Satoshi Saida que je n'ai pas joué depuis longtemps. Un an avant les Jeux Paralympiques de Pékin être numéro 3 et être le premier français au classement mondial ne signifie pas grand chose mais cela permet d'être bien placé dans les tableaux en étant tête de série n° 3 ou 4 voire même 1 ou 2. | |||||

Ammerlaan will play compatriot and sixth seed Maikel Scheffers in the quarter-finals after Scheffers' straight sets win over David Phillipson (GBR). Meanwhile, Houdet will face young Swede Stefan Olsson in the last eight and will be hoping to gain revenge for Olsson putting the Frenchman out early at last week's British Open.
